  1. Please recall one of your past research/essays/artworks (it can be the research you shared above).

  2. Did you apply any of the principles that Duncum mentions in the article? Which one? Please briefly state how this or those principles you are applied in the research/essays/artworks.

My artwork from last semester: “Save the Poudre” is a print media I created through screen printing. It is a drawing of a river with trees and rocks surrounding it and the words “Save the Poudre” at the bottom. With this artwork, I applied principles of power, ideology, representation, seduction, intertextuality, and multimodality. Power is present because I was expressing my own value towards the Poudre River and water sustainability in general. I left it up to the viewer to interpret what I mean by “save” because then it implies that the river is in some kind of danger. Same goes for ideology because I was trying to get a reaction out of the viewers to want to be progressive in helping conserve our river’s ecosystem. Representation speaks for itself but basically I am representing my own image of what the Poudre River looks like to me. Seduction also has to do with the imagery because it has sensory elements of water and nature that is intended to lure the viewer in. (I also experimented with different colors to see what viewer outcomes I would get and I’ll include both photos at the bottom.) Intertextuality goes with multimodality for this print because the wording I chose to use below my image. “Save the Poudre” is a common local saying in Fort Collins and can be recognized on many posters, stickers, and other print media around town. The connectivity this has with the local area only strengthens its intent because it is a more known idea to potentially “save the Poudre.” Without that saying at the bottom of the image, it would have a completely different meaning because it would just be a picture of a river, rather than a specific river that is supposed to provoke the viewer.
