Arts-based research: Clinton and Levy

Writer's picture: Emily GayleEmily Gayle

  • Please reference the TABLE 20.1 (page 6 of 40) and think about which type of arts-based research you will be interested to discover.

    • Arts in qualitative research

    • Arts based inquiry

    • Arts based qualitative research

    • Arts based research

  • There are four aspects of strength that Leavy mentions from p. 8-10. Have you ever felt one of them when you conducted an arts research/project in the past? What did you feel at that time?

    • One strength of arts-based research that I have resonated with is the holistic and transdisciplinary approach. Feelings of a creative, innovative, and responsive mindset overcame me when I worked with stone lithography. It is a very process-oriented art and offers systems of input, output, feedback, and goals for the processes of making a print.

  • There are different approaches under various genres that Leavy categorizes for arts-based research. Which approach interests you the most and you may want to explore and experiment it for your final project.

    • Mixed media and participatory and transformative interest me in exploring further. More so participatory and transformative. I want to use art as a form of record of the research data I find.

Three questions about arts-based research:

  1. How is it possible to use mixed methods of quantitative and qualitative research through arts-based research?

  2. How can meta-cognitive experiences be quantified through arts based research?

  3. When is usefulness more valuable than aesthetics?
